Kennington is the critical junction point on the Northern line. At this station, the line's two southern branches converge from the south and then split again heading north - trains coming from Morden via Bank or via Charing Cross both pass through Kennington before diverging northbound toward their respective central London routes. For passengers heading into central London from south of the river, the platform indicator at Kennington showing which branch your train is taking is the most important piece of information on your journey. Check whether your train is going via Bank (toward Monument, Liverpool Street, Moorgate) or via Charing Cross (toward Waterloo, Embankment, Charing Cross).
The station opened in 1890 as part of the original City and South London Railway and retains its Victorian deep-level character. It is not step-free and the surrounding area - the neighbourhood of Kennington proper - is a quiet south London residential district that sits between the busier hubs of Oval (one stop south) and Elephant and Castle (one stop north).
Kennington Park is nearby - a pleasant public park used heavily by local residents and considerably less crowded than Clapham Common or Burgess Park. The Kia Oval cricket ground is a 5-minute walk from the station.
Kennington station opened in 1890 and serves Zone 1 on the Northern line. It is the key interchange point between the Northern line's Bank and Charing Cross branches. The station is not step-free.
The Northern line (black) serves Kennington on both branches. Northbound from Kennington, trains split - some go via Elephant and Castle to Bank and the City; others go via Waterloo to Charing Cross and the West End. Check destination boards on the platform. Southbound trains from both branches reunite at Kennington heading toward Oval, Stockwell and Morden.
Kennington station has an information point. The surrounding area has local shops and cafes within a few minutes' walk.
Kennington is not step-free. Stockwell (two stops south on the Morden branch) has step-free access on the Northern and Victoria lines.
Kennington Park - 5 minutes walk. A local south London park with sports facilities and open green space. Less crowded than nearby Clapham Common.
Kia Oval cricket ground - 5 minutes walk (closer from Oval station one stop south). Home of Surrey Cricket Club and England Test matches.
A busy junction station throughout the day. Rush hours 08:00-09:30 and 17:30-19:30 are most congested. Cricket match days at the Kia Oval add extra passenger flow at Oval station (one stop south) more than at Kennington itself.
