Nine Elms opened in 2021 as one of two stations on the Northern line's Battersea extension, the first new Underground line in central London since the Jubilee Line Extension in 1999. The station sits beneath the rapidly developing Nine Elms corridor - one of London's most extensive regeneration zones, covering around 500 acres of former industrial land between Vauxhall and Battersea. Thousands of new homes, offices, the relocated New Covent Garden Market and the US Embassy are all part of this district, which is visibly under construction and transformation across multiple sites simultaneously.
The US Embassy is directly above the station - a substantial cube of glass and steel that opened in 2017 and relocated from its previous address in Grosvenor Square. It is not accessible to the public except for official business, but the building is a landmark in its own right. New Covent Garden Market, London's wholesale fruit, flower and vegetable market, operates from a site nearby and is occasionally open to members of the public for the flower market on weekend mornings - worth checking in advance if flowers or fresh produce at wholesale prices interest you.
Battersea Power Station is one stop further south - a 3-minute Northern line journey from Nine Elms - and the combination of both stations makes a good basis for exploring this part of south-west London.
