Tooting Bec station is the closest Underground access point to Tooting Bec Lido — at 91 metres, one of the largest outdoor swimming pools in the UK. The lido opened in 1906 and is a beloved south London institution. Painted in a different colour on each of its changing cubicle doors, open from May to September and unheated, it is the kind of outdoor swimming experience that requires commitment but rewards it. On a warm July morning, the lido's long lanes and art-deco surroundings are genuinely excellent. The station is about a 5-minute walk from the pool entrance through Tooting Common.
Tooting Common itself — the large open space between Balham and Tooting — is directly accessible from the station, with woodland, grassland and recreational facilities across its considerable extent.
Tooting Bec opened in 1926 as part of the Morden extension. It serves Zone 3 on the Northern line only. The station is not step-free.
The Northern line connects north toward Balham, Clapham South and into central London. Southbound trains run toward Tooting Broadway and Morden. Journey to Waterloo is approximately 20 minutes.
Tooting Bec has a small shop. The surrounding streets have local cafes. The lido itself has changing facilities and a small cafe when open.
Tooting Bec is not step-free.
