About West Ham

West Ham is one of east London's most significant transport interchanges - a four-line station connecting the Jubilee line, District line, Hammersmith and City line and the DLR, with National Rail services also calling at the adjacent station. The convergence of this many lines at a Zone 3 location makes West Ham an important cross-London connection point for journeys that need to move between the northern, central and southern east London transport network.

The London Stadium, home of West Ham United and the venue for the 2012 London Olympics athletics programme, is a 10-minute walk from West Ham station. On match days and major events, the stadium draws large crowds and the station becomes correspondingly busy. West Ham station and Stratford station (the nearest to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park) both serve the stadium area - West Ham is marginally closer to the stadium entrance, while Stratford offers more transport options including Overground, Elizabeth line and National Rail connections.

East Village - the residential neighbourhood that grew from the 2012 Olympic Athletes' Village - sits immediately adjacent to West Ham station. The village, designed for around 3,000 homes, has its own urban square, shops, cafes and green spaces. The transition from the Athletes' Village to a functioning neighbourhood has been largely successful and the area has developed a community identity.

Travel Tips

  • For London Stadium match days, West Ham station is slightly closer than Stratford to the stadium entrance - but Stratford handles larger crowds more easily due to more exits and lines
  • East Village (directly adjacent) is worth a short walk to see the former Olympic Athletes' Village repurposed as an urban neighbourhood
  • The four-line interchange at West Ham makes it useful for cross-east London journeys that don't need to go through Zone 1
  • National Rail (Greater Anglia, c2c) at the adjacent West Ham NR station provides additional connections toward Fenchurch Street
