Kentish Town is a Northern line station in Zone 2 that has tracked north London's broader story of the past 30 years - from a working-class neighbourhood with few pretensions to a mixed, increasingly expensive area where independent coffee shops, wine bars and design studios have settled alongside the long-established Caribbean and South Asian businesses that have always been part of its character. The transformation is not complete and the area retains a genuine diversity that some of its more polished neighbours to the north and south have lost.
Kentish Town Road - the main high street that runs south from the station toward Camden - is the area's spine. The Forum music venue, housed in a magnificent art deco cinema building that opened in 1934, is one of north London's most loved mid-size concert venues. Its curved art deco facade and the intimacy of its interior (capacity around 2,300) make it an excellent place to see mid-career artists and bands. The programming tends toward indie, alternative, electronic and world music.
The area sits between Camden Town (one stop south, with its market and nightlife) and Tufnell Park to the north, giving easy access in either direction. Hampstead Heath is reachable in about 20 minutes on foot through the residential streets of Dartmouth Park, which offers a quieter approach than the more visited village side of the heath.
Kentish Town station opened in 1907 and was substantially reconstructed in the 1980s. It sits in Zone 2 and serves the Northern line (High Barnet branch). The station is not step-free.
The Northern line (black, High Barnet branch) connects south to Camden Town (2 minutes), Euston, King's Cross and central London. Northbound trains run toward Tufnell Park, Archway and the High Barnet branch. Journey to King's Cross is approximately 8 minutes.
Kentish Town station has a shop and cafes. The surrounding high street provides good food and retail options.
Kentish Town is not step-free. King's Cross (several stops south) has step-free access on the Northern line.
The Forum - 5 minutes walk. One of north London's best mid-size music venues in an art deco cinema building. Check listings at kentishtownforum.com.
Kentish Town Road - Immediately outside. The area's main high street with independent cafes, restaurants and the mix of old and new that defines the neighbourhood.
Hampstead Heath - 20 minutes walk north. 800 acres of open space, ponds and views. A quieter approach than via Hampstead village.
Camden Market - 5 minutes (one stop south to Camden Town). London's most famous alternative market with food, fashion and music.
The Northern line serves Kentish Town throughout the day. Rush hours (08:00-09:30 and 17:30-19:30) are the busiest periods. Concert nights at The Forum add evening crowds on the high street. Weekend afternoons draw visitors to the food scene and as a base for Hampstead Heath walks.
