About Mornington Crescent

Mornington Crescent is a Northern line station in Zone 2 sitting between Camden Town and Euston, and it carries an unusual cultural distinction: it is the most famous Tube station name in British comedy. For decades, BBC Radio 4's long-running panel show "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue" has included a game called Mornington Crescent in which panellists take turns naming Tube stations according to rules that are never explained, until one player dramatically declares "Mornington Crescent!" to win the round. The game has no actual rules - it is an extended absurdist joke about the pomposity of rule-governed games - but it has made the station name one of the most recognisable in British radio comedy culture.

The station building itself is a handsome Leslie Green design from 1907, part of the series of ox-blood terracotta-facade stations that Green designed for the early deep-level tube lines. The dark red glazed tiles and rounded corner entrance are characteristic of Green's approach and are well-preserved on this building.

The surrounding area sits in a transitional stretch between Camden's markets to the north and the institutional density of Euston and King's Cross to the south. Regent's Park is about 15 minutes walk west. The canal and towpath are accessible from Camden (one stop north) for walking east toward London Fields or west toward Little Venice.

Mornington Crescent opened in 1907 and serves Zone 2 on the Northern line only. The station is not step-free. It was closed between 1992 and 1998 for lift replacement works.
