West Hampstead is a Jubilee line and Overground interchange in north London at the centre of one of the area's most consistently popular residential neighbourhoods. West End Lane - the main street running north from the station - has developed a concentration of independent restaurants, wine bars and cafes that is unusually good for Zone 2 north London, and the surrounding streets of large Victorian houses have attracted young professionals and families who appreciate the combination of good transport and a local dining scene that does not require going into central London.
The Overground at West Hampstead connects the area into the orbital network - services run south toward Clapham Junction and Richmond, and east toward Stratford, making West Hampstead a useful hub for cross-London journeys without going through Zone 1. The station is also within 20 minutes walk of Hampstead Heath, the 800-acre ancient open space to the east.
The neighbourhood itself - West Hampstead proper - extends for several streets around the station and has a complete, self-contained character. The local farmers' market, independent food shops and the density of good restaurants give it a village feel that many London neighbourhoods claim but few actually deliver.
West Hampstead station on the Jubilee line opened in 1879 as part of the Metropolitan Railway extension. It serves Zone 2. The adjacent West Hampstead Overground station is nearby on Blackburn Road. Neither station is step-free.
The Jubilee line (silver) connects south toward Finchley Road, Swiss Cottage, Baker Street (8 minutes) and central London. Northbound trains run toward Kilburn, Wembley Park and Stanmore.
The London Overground (West Hampstead Thameslink) connects south toward Finchley Road and Frognal, Hampstead Heath, Gospel Oak, Kentish Town West, Caledonian Road and Barnsbury, Canonbury, Highbury and Islington. Southbound services connect toward Clapham Junction and Richmond via the Overground network.
