About Tochomae

Tochomae is named for its location directly beneath the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building - the seat of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and one of the city's most recognisable modern landmarks. Designed by Kenzo Tange and completed in 1991, its twin towers offer free observatories on both towers giving panoramic 360° views of Tokyo and Mt Fuji on clear days. Shinjuku Central Park is immediately adjacent.

Traveller Tips

  • 1The observation deck is free and open until 23:00 (south tower) - the best free view in Tokyo
  • 2On clear winter days (December-February) Mt Fuji is clearly visible to the west
  • 3The north tower observatory is also free and has a restaurant and bar
  • 4Shinjuku Central Park is a pleasant quiet area in an otherwise hectic neighbourhood
