Gants Hill station has a distinction shared by very few stations in London: it was deliberately designed to look like a Moscow Metro station. The architect Charles Holden, who designed many of the Underground's most celebrated 1930s stations, was influenced by the grand barrel-vaulted central concourses of the Moscow subway when creating Gants Hill. The result is a striking subterranean hall with a broad vaulted ceiling and flanking columns that feels genuinely different from any other station on the network. Travel writers and architecture enthusiasts make specific journeys to see it. The surrounding area in the London Borough of Redbridge has a strong South Asian - particularly South Indian and Sri Lankan - community, with the Ilford town centre accessible nearby for the Gold Street jewellery market and some of east London's best value South Asian food.
Gants Hill station opened in 1947 as part of the Central line extension. It sits in Zone 4 and is served by the Central line only. The station does not have step-free access. It is between Redbridge to the west and Newbury Park to the east on the Hainault loop branch.
The Central line (red) connects west through Redbridge, Wanstead, Snaresbrook and into central London. Eastbound, the line continues on the Hainault loop through Newbury Park, Barkingside, Fairlop and Hainault. Journey time to Liverpool Street is approximately twenty-two minutes.
Gants Hill station has shops and a travel information point. The surrounding area has South Asian restaurants, supermarkets and specialist food shops within a short walk.
