DeKalb Avenue is one of downtown Brooklyn's main subway interchange points, with six lines converging underground near the busy Flatbush Avenue and Fulton Street junction. The B, D, N, Q, R and W trains all stop here, making it a critical node for journeys from Manhattan into central Brooklyn and beyond. The station opened in 1920 and has been a busy transfer point ever since.
The area above the station has changed considerably in recent decades. What was once a purely commercial district now has a genuine food and cultural scene alongside the shops. DeKalb Market Hall, just steps away, is one of Brooklyn's best food halls. The Manhattan Bridge pedestrian path is a short walk and gives excellent views of the Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO waterfront. This is a practical station to know, whether you are passing through or specifically heading to the neighbourhood.
DeKalb Avenue is a Zone 2 underground station serving the B, D, N, Q, R and W trains. It opened in 1920 and is not wheelchair accessible. Shops are available at street level near the exits on Flatbush Avenue and DeKalb Avenue.
The B and D trains run along the Brighton Line toward Midtown Manhattan via the Manhattan Bridge and continue to the Bronx. The N, Q, R and W trains serve the 4th Avenue line in Brooklyn, running into Manhattan via the tunnel under the East River. Northbound services from all these lines reach Manhattan in around 10 to 15 minutes. The B and D continue to Midtown (34th Street Herald Square in about 15 minutes). The R continues to Midtown and Queens via the Queens-Midtown Tunnel.
DeKalb Avenue has two separate station complexes that share a connecting mezzanine. The B and D trains are on one set of tracks; the N, Q, R and W are on another. Both are accessible from the main entrance on Flatbush Avenue and DeKalb Avenue. The station has no step-free access. Shops are at street level but there are no facilities inside the station itself. The nearest fully accessible station for these lines is Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center, a short walk or one stop south.
DeKalb Market Hall - 2 minutes on foot. A food hall and market in the basement of the Macy's building on Flatbush Avenue. Local Brooklyn food vendors, international street food and a lively atmosphere, particularly at lunch and on weekends.
Manhattan Bridge Pedestrian Path - 10 minutes on foot northeast. The north sidewalk of the Manhattan Bridge is open to pedestrians and cyclists. Views from the span include the Brooklyn Bridge, DUMBO and lower Manhattan. Free to cross.
Fulton Mall - at street level. Brooklyn's main shopping strip running along Fulton Street above the station, with clothing, electronics and food from dozens of retailers.
Barclays Center - 5 minutes south on Flatbush. Brooklyn's main entertainment arena, home to the Brooklyn Nets NBA team and a major concert venue.
The subway runs 24 hours. The B train does not run overnight; the D, N, Q and R provide overnight coverage. The W runs peak and off-peak hours only. Weekday commute times (8am to 9am and 5pm to 7pm) are the busiest periods at this station. Weekend afternoons are the best time to visit DeKalb Market Hall before it fills up.
