Nostrand Avenue is a 3 train stop in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, one of New York's most culturally layered neighbourhoods. Crown Heights has been home for decades to a large Caribbean-American community, particularly Jamaican and Trinidadian families who arrived from the 1950s onward, alongside a Lubavitch Hasidic Jewish community centred on Kingston Avenue. The neighbourhood has a history, a food culture and a social scene that few visitors to New York ever discover.
The station opened in 1920 and sits on Nostrand Avenue, the main commercial corridor of the neighbourhood. Shops line the street above. A short walk north along Eastern Parkway leads to the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, two major institutions that draw visitors from across the city and beyond. This is a useful station for cultural institutions and neighbourhood exploration alike.
Nostrand Avenue is a Zone 3 station on the 3 line, opened in 1920. It is not wheelchair accessible. Shops are available at street level. The station is in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, on the Eastern Parkway corridor.
Only the 3 train serves Nostrand Avenue. Northbound, the 3 runs into Manhattan, reaching Fulton Street in lower Manhattan in about 15 minutes and Times Square in about 25 minutes. Southbound, the 3 continues to Saratoga Avenue, New Lots Avenue and East New York. This is a local service with no express option on this stretch.
The station is a standard underground IRT local station with a single island platform. There are no in-station facilities. Shops are available at street level on Nostrand Avenue. The station has no step-free access. For accessible travel to the Brooklyn Museum area, the Eastern Parkway–Brooklyn Museum station (one stop west on the 2/3 at Franklin Avenue, or a walk) is accessible via the 2/3 at Grand Army Plaza.
Brooklyn Museum - 15 minutes on foot west along Eastern Parkway. One of the largest art museums in the United States, with an encyclopaedic collection spanning ancient Egypt to contemporary American art. Pay-what-you-can admission on first Saturdays from 5pm.
Brooklyn Botanic Garden - adjacent to the Brooklyn Museum. A 52-acre garden with Japanese and English landscape sections, a cherry esplanade and a sensory garden. Admission charged; free Tuesday mornings and all day on Fridays from November to February.
Eastern Parkway - at street level. A broad landscaped boulevard designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, lined with apartment buildings and connecting the museum complex to the neighbourhood. Pleasant for walking.
Crown Heights Caribbean Food Scene - immediate vicinity. Nostrand Avenue and Flatbush Avenue have some of the best Caribbean cooking in New York City, particularly for Jamaican, Trinidadian and Guyanese cuisines.
The subway runs 24 hours. The 3 train serves this station throughout but with reduced frequency overnight. The neighbourhood is active from morning through late evening. Weekends are particularly lively for food and community activity on Nostrand Avenue. For the Brooklyn Museum and Botanic Garden, aim for a Tuesday (museum free in the morning) or Friday (garden free). Cherry blossom season at the Botanic Garden (late April to early May) is extremely popular and can be crowded on weekends.
