Châtelet is the beating heart of the Paris Métro - the world's largest underground station complex, where five Métro lines converge beneath the geographic centre of the city. Connected by tunnel to Les Halles, it also links to the RER A, B and D lines, making this the single most connected transit point in France. Eurostar passengers transfer through here, tourists arrive for the Centre Pompidou, and millions of Parisians pass through every day without giving it a second thought.
Above ground, the Forum des Halles occupies the site of the old central market halls demolished in 1971 - a decision still controversial in Paris. Around it, the streets run toward the Marais district east and the Latin Quarter south across the Seine. The Centre Pompidou, with its inside-out architecture and world-class modern art collection, is a five-minute walk east.
Châtelet sits in Zone 1 and serves Lines 1, 4, 7, 11 and 14 on the Métro. Via the connecting Les Halles station, RER A, B and D are also accessible. The station complex is extremely large - allow 10 minutes for cross-platform connections during your first visit.
Line 1 (east-west) runs from La Défense to Château de Vincennes. Line 4 (north-south) connects Montrouge to Clignancourt via Saint-Michel and Montparnasse. Line 7 runs to Opéra and Gare de l'Est northward, and to Villejuif south. Line 11 connects to République and Belleville east. Line 14 (fully automated) gives the fastest cross-city route via Saint-Lazare and Olympiades. RER A connects to CDG Airport (via Gare du Nord) and Versailles (direct).
Toilets, ATMs, Wi-Fi, shops and cafes are all available within the station complex. The Forum des Halles above has extensive retail and food options across multiple levels.
Châtelet has step-free access on several lines. Check RATP accessibility maps for the specific platform-level access required for your journey, as the large multi-level complex has variable lift coverage.
Centre Pompidou - 5 minutes walk east. One of Europe's great modern art museums in a building that is itself a landmark. The rooftop terrace has exceptional views. Admission charged; free first Sundays.
Forum des Halles - Directly above. Underground shopping centre with cinema, swimming pool and the Jardin Nelson Mandela above ground.
Notre-Dame Cathedral - 15 minutes walk south. Reopened December 2024 after restoration; book timed entry online.
Châtelet operates from approximately 05:30 to 01:15 Monday to Thursday, and through the night Friday and Saturday. The station is busiest 08:00–09:30 and 17:00–19:30 on weekdays. Off-peak mid-mornings are the most comfortable time to navigate the complex.
If you are heading to Forum des Halles, Châtelet is your closest metro stop on the Ligne 1. It also gives easy access to Centre Pompidou and Notre-Dame (15 min walk). Use the fare calculator to plan your journey cost before you travel.
