High Barnet is the northern terminus of the Northern line's High Barnet branch, a Zone 5 station close to the Hertfordshire border where London's suburban development finally gives way to something approaching genuine countryside. The station was originally part of a Great Northern Railway branch line that was absorbed into London Transport's network in 1940. Barnet town, a short walk away, has a pleasant high street and one of north London's best independent shopping areas. The historically significant Hadley Common lies nearby - ancient woodland that marks the approximate site of the Battle of Barnet in 1471, a pivotal engagement in the Wars of the Roses.
High Barnet station opened in 1940 when London Transport took over the former Great Northern Railway branch. It sits in Zone 5 and is the northern terminus of the Northern line's High Barnet branch. The station does not have step-free access but has a large car park. All Northern line services from here head south towards central London.
