About Anvers

Anvers is the foot-of-the-hill Métro station for Sacré-Cœur - the white travertine basilica that dominates the Paris skyline from the summit of the Butte Montmartre. From the station exit, the famous staircase of Rue Foyatier climbs 222 steps to the basilica terrace, where one of the widest panoramic views over Paris opens up. The funicular railway to the right of the staircase accepts standard Métro tickets and takes 90 seconds.

The neighbourhood between the station and the base of the hill - Boulevard de Rochechouart and its surroundings - is lively and affordable, with an authentic Paris energy quite different from the touristified upper village around Place du Tertre.

Station Overview

Zone 1. Line 2 only. No step-free access.

Travel Tips

  • The funicular from Rue Foyatier (right side of the stairs) accepts one standard Métro ticket - much easier than the 222-step climb
  • Sacré-Cœur is free to enter; the dome costs a small fee but gives extraordinary close-up views
  • Place du Tertre (artists' square) is 5 minutes from the basilica - visit before 10:00 for a glimpse of it without crowds
  • The neighbourhood below the hill has far better and cheaper food than the tourist-facing Montmartre village above
