Pigalle has been Paris's entertainment quarter for over a century - the Moulin Rouge opened in 1889 on Boulevard de Clichy, three minutes walk west of the station. The neighbourhood's reputation as a red-light district has faded significantly in recent decades, replaced by a creative identity centred on music: Rue Victor Massé is lined with independent guitar shops, vintage record stores and instrument dealers that draw musicians from across the city.
South Pigalle - the area around Rue Jean-Baptiste Pigalle and Rue Henry Monnier, now known as SoPi - has become one of the best cocktail bar neighbourhoods in Paris, with a genuine creative scene that replaced the old commercial sex economy with something more interesting.
