Gold Souq

Few metro stops in Dubai deliver a stronger sense of arrival than Gold Souq. Climb out of the platforms and you step straight into the older, denser side of Deira, where narrow lanes are lined with jewellers whose windows drip with bangles, chains and the odd headline-grabbing world-record necklace. It is loud, close and completely different in mood from the glass towers you may have travelled in from.

The station takes its name from the market that made this district famous, and for good reason, the covered lanes of the Deira Gold Souk begin only a short walk from the exits. Traders here have been dealing in gold for generations, and even if you buy nothing, the sheer density of shopfronts and the constant bargaining make it one of the most atmospheric corners of the city to wander through on foot.

Station Overview

Gold Souq Station opened in 2011 on the Dubai Metro's Green Line. It sits in Zone 5 of the NOL fare system. The Dubai Metro runs fully automated, driverless trains, and Gold Souq is an underground station reached by lifts, escalators and stairs from street level.

Lines and Connectivity

Gold Souq is a Green Line station. From here the line runs south through Deira and under the Creek towards Al Ghubaiba and the terminus at Creek, and the other way it heads towards Etisalat. It is not an interchange, so for the Red Line and destinations like the airport or Downtown you change at Union or BurJuman.

Station Layout and Structure

Being underground, the station keeps its platforms below the busy streets, with a concourse level above holding the ticket gates and machines. Facilities include toilets, ATMs, NOL top-up machines and a staffed service point. Gold Class carriages sit at the front of each train and a women and children carriage runs in the middle, both marked along the platform edge.

Accessibility

Gold Souq has full step-free access, with lifts linking street level, the concourse and the platforms. Tactile paving, audio announcements and platform screen doors are all in place, which is welcome given how crowded the surrounding lanes can get during shopping hours.

Travel Tips

• Follow the souk signage from the exit, the covered Gold Souk lanes are only a few minutes on foot.
• Come in the evening when the jewellers are fully lit and the alleys are at their liveliest and coolest.
• A NOL card costs AED 25 including AED 19 of credit and works on metro, bus, tram and marine transport.
• For the Red Line, change at Union or BurJuman.
• The metro runs Saturday to Wednesday 05:00-00:00, Thursday 05:00-01:00 and Friday 08:00-01:00.

Deira Gold Souk - a short walk from the station, a warren of covered lanes packed with gold and jewellery traders.

Spice Souk - close by towards the Creek, fragrant stalls piled with saffron, dried limes, frankincense and herbs.

Dubai Creek dhow wharfage - a walk down towards the water, where wooden trading boats still load cargo along the Creek.

Timings and Best Time to Travel

Trains at Gold Souq run Saturday to Wednesday 05:00-00:00, Thursday 05:00-01:00 and Friday 08:00-01:00. Weekday rush hours are roughly 07:30-09:30 and 17:00-19:30. The souks themselves are quieter in the early afternoon heat and come alive again from late afternoon into the evening, which is the nicest time to explore.
